1938年賽珍珠因“對中國農(nóng)民生活豐富真實(shí)的史詩般的描述，以及在傳記方面的杰作”而被授予該年度的諾貝爾文學(xué)獎。《異邦客》與《戰(zhàn)斗的天使》這兩部同樣為其獲獎原因的傳記卻未能引起廣泛的注意。而實(shí)際上兩部傳記有助于解決至今仍有爭議的賽珍珠的文化身份問題。 作為史料，這兩部傳記證明了賽珍珠的美國裔身份，及其美國文化背景。作為文本，這兩部傳記揭示了賽珍珠對美國文化的認(rèn)同及其為美國文化所認(rèn)同的原因。追尋第一世界的文化認(rèn)同以及為弱勢文化代言是賽珍珠文化身份建構(gòu)中相互依存的兩個方面。這兩個方面相互支持，同時也相互干擾。當(dāng)賽珍珠試圖為弱勢文化代言時，她無法排除來自強(qiáng)勢文化的干擾。因此她的作品不可避免地具有一定的局限性。我們必須從跨文化的角度更加寬容地對待和評價賽珍珠的作品。但同時也不應(yīng)過于主觀地看待賽珍珠的文化身份問題，將她的小說提升到一個不恰當(dāng)?shù)母叨取?br>
