文化身份的嬗變—解讀弗雷德里克·道格拉斯的三部自傳

弗雷德里克·道格拉斯是一名杰出的黑人演講家、編輯、廢奴主義者。他的一生坎坷復(fù)雜,由最初一個飽受凌辱的奴隸,到一個逃亡奴隸,到最后成為一個政治家。而反映其不平凡人生的是他的三部自傳:1845年出版的《黑人奴隸弗雷德里克·道格拉斯的生平自述》、1855年出版的《我的奴役與我的自由》和1881年出版的《我的生平與時代》。鑒于其自傳敘述特色,國內(nèi)外大多數(shù)批評家都從奴隸敘述的角度對他的傳記進行闡釋。 本文主要探討弗雷德里克·道格拉斯在不同時期發(fā)表的自傳中所呈現(xiàn)出的不同文化身份。第一部自傳呈現(xiàn)的是一個被踐踏的邊緣者的文化身份,刻畫了一個缺乏自我的黑人奴隸。在耳聞目睹了無數(shù)血淋淋的事實后,他選擇了逃亡,走上了一條不同于其他奴隸的道路。在第二部自傳中道格拉斯展現(xiàn)了一個人身和精神都獲得自由的自我。他開始意識到:罪惡的根源是奴隸制,奴隸制不僅是對奴隸的迫害,也是對奴隸主人性的迫害。因而他跳出了單純的黑人奴隸身份的視角,開始以一種理性的思維來看待奴隸主和奴隸。此時的他游移于邊緣文化群體之外,解構(gòu)了之前單純的邊緣文化身份。第三部自傳出版時,奴隸制已經(jīng)廢除多年,奴隸和奴隸主之間的緊張關(guān)系已經(jīng)得到了很大程度上的緩...
