　　托尼·莫里森作為第一位獲得諾貝爾文學獎的美國黑人作家,被廣泛認定為美國黑人文學的代言人。本文運用后殖民主義理論對托尼·莫里森的第四部小說《柏油孩子》進行剖析,認為小說通過一對固守各自文化信念的黑人青年,森和吉丁,他們對生活道路的抉擇折射出傳統(tǒng)與現(xiàn)代的矛盾以及黑白文化之間的沖突。他們之間無果的愛情體現(xiàn)了黑人在白人文化占主流的世界中喪失了本民族文化的境遇,盡管非裔的美國黑人不是第三世界被殖民統(tǒng)治的人們,但是他們的文化和信仰仍舊被白人統(tǒng)治著。《柏油孩子》的開放式結(jié)尾體現(xiàn)著作者對美國黑人文化的發(fā)展方向的思考,即黑人在取得基本人權(quán)后,面臨著如何在美國文化中尋找自己文化身份的問題,并且探索了黑人文化在美國文化中的地位。
